It is said that the Congress has nurtured former chief minister late Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy because he was a rebel. Yeduguri Sandinti Jaganmohan Reddy (born December 21, 1972) also called Jagan is no different from his father, ruthless in dealing with his distracters and deeply loyal to his followers.
Jagan was not a public figure till his father’s tragic death in a chopper crash. It was alleged that he, with the help of his father’s left hand KVP Ramachandra Rao enlisted support of enough MLAs to form a government even before the mortal remains of his father were cremated.
What followed that move has created political history in Andhra Pradesh. With a heartbroken mother and sister in tow, he walked out of 10 Janapath and never looked back. His grudge was that party high command has denied a chance to console kin of those died of shock or committed suicide after the sudden demise of YSR.
Six months after his father’s death, he began an odarpu yatra (condolence tour) as promised. The Congress party’s central leadership directed him to call off his odarpu yatra, an order which he defied leading to a fallout with the high command. He went ahead with the yatra, stating that it was a personal matter and a promise he can’t take back.
On 29 November, 2010, he resigned, after fallout with the Congress high command. He announced on 7 December 2010 from Pulivendula in Kadapa district that he would be starting a new party within 45 days. In February, 2011, he took over a party which had existed on paper only, and was officially recognized on February 16 as president of the YSR Congress Party. Jagan as a president of YSR Congress faced by-election from the Kadapa constituency and won by the huge margin of 5,45,043 votes.
The MP of from Kadapa constituency was in jail on corruption charges from May 2012 till Sept 2013. After 16 months, on September 23, 2013, a special CBI court granted him conditional bail. After his bail and the grand welcome that he received from his fans, the rebel in him made him take a decision that sealed YSRCP‘s fate in Telangana . He announced that his party would stick to United Andhra Pradesh and embarked on Samaikhya Sankaharavam Yatra to complete the Odarpu Yatra that he left incomplete before going to Chanchalguda Jail.
“Jagan in jail was more powerful than as a freeman, as his distracters allege that that he sold his soul to the Congress to secure his release from Jail,” a senior Congress leader from Kadapa observed. No matter what Jagan is saying now, he is being branded as a rebel with Congress DNA who will consolidate anti Congress votes and hand over them to UPA-3 under outside support.
Despite, telling a scribe to slap Congress leader Digvijay Singh for saying that he had Congress genes in him , the beleaguered young leader still could make amends with the Congress cause he considers the NDA, communal and has reservations about joining the elusive third front in which his arch rival Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP will be a partner. Both ways Jagan has sway over the crowds particularly the young and restless like him to reach the sky whatever may be the outcome. If played well, he even might become the first chief minister of residual Andhra Pradesh, or might end up in opposition that is the risk he is willing to take as a young entrepreneur from Bangalore used to windfall gains.
Jagan is married to Bharathi Reddy and is blessed with two children.
